Special Guests

Neil Gardiner

Neil Gardiner is a Toronto-based Musician, Composer and Performance Artist for piano, trombone, and voice. A graduate of Yale University with studies in Ethnomusicology, Neil has a diverse range of musical interests with genres ranging from Classical, Jazz, Latin and World Beat to exploring African, Caribbean and Mediterranean folkloric music and cultural traditions. He has run organizations in the non-profit arts sector including the ‘Canadian League of Composers’, ‘Small World Music’, and ‘Worlds of Music Toronto’, presenting music workshops in diverse musical traditions. Neil has performed and recorded with numerous musical ensembles in musical styles including pop, swing, African pop music, Indian classical music, Persian traditional music and Afro-Cuban music. Neil is pleased to be presenting a Cuban composition and exploring some basics of Cuban music with the participants in this Whispering River session. David McFadden.

A graduate of Utrecht’s Conservatorium in Holland after completing a First Class Honours ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music here in Toronto, David McFadden performed with the Toronto Symphony for 16 seasons. He is well-known as an outstanding, leading musician in the recording studio and freelance music scene of Toronto and is currently the Concert Master of Huronia Symphony in Barrie. His long list of affiliations includes the Canadian Opera Company, National Ballet, Kitchener Symphony, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Symphony Nova Scotia. David McFadden’s varied career has taken him from chamber music to musical theatre where he was Concertmaster for shows like Ragtime, ShowBoat and Sunset Blvd. Other shows include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast. Other ventures have included recordings and concerts with a wide range of musical styles and performers such as Ray Charles, Liza Minelli, Bobby Vinton, Peter Gabriel, Donny Osmond, Andrea Bocelli, Blue Rodeo, and Josh Groban to name a few. Mr. McFadden is actively involved in music ministry with his wife Julie in the local church and beyond. They are the Directors of Music at the Muskoka Bible Centre since 2019. As Concertmaster of the Huronia Symphony, Mr.McFadden’s consummate mastery of the violin is much admired in our area, as well as nationally. He is a much-loved and respected Barrie studio teacher, who teaches Strings privately out of his Music Studio in Midhurst. He also runs Bravura House, maker of all levels of stringed instruments and accessories, providing sales and rentals to string players across North America. David continues study in advanced violin repair, bow making, and bow re-hairing & repair at the University of New Hampshire’s Violin Craftsmanship Institute.
