Call for Violinist Intern


Whispering River Music is seeking a violinist to collaborate in the active development of a growing community arts hub in Parry Sound and the surrounding communities through building and leading creativity centered violin classes for students of all ages and skill levels, and at the same time serve as section leader for a vibrant, welcoming community string orchestra with an active interest in developing new Canadian concert music. The chosen candidate will also act as a mentor for young artists aged 15 - 30 working seasonally through Canada Summer Jobs programs, and be part of a creative team facilitating a two week summer day camp offering music, art and musical theater.
 

Prospective employees will be able to forge creative connections between music, the arts and other communities and disciplines, and will work on administrative tasks collectively with other members of the creative / admin team. Work takes place in a collaborative environment alongside compassionate, cooperative colleagues and volunteers. Long term employment opportunities with WRM are available beyond the 23/24 season’s activities in the beautiful Biosphere region of Parry Sound and Georgian Bay.

Responsibilities

  • Violin Teacher - teach private violin / viola lessons and group string / violin classes for children and adults -  approximately 15 hours / week

  • Administrative Team Assistant - community engagement, event planning, lesson scheduling, promotional material design, completing grant reports and applications, budgeting, basic website design, social media updates, email communications and other administrative tasks involved in running a registered Canadian charity/community music organization - approximately 20 hours / week
     

  • Section Leader for Whispering River Orchestra’s main concert series - approx. 5 hours per week

  • Weekly orchestra rehearsals and leading one sectional per month

  • Clinician for special events / music programs occurring throughout the year

  • Premier / compose / perform works by Canadian composers

  • Participate in collaborative projects with northern artists and ensembles, participate in innovative community programs, network with community members and local businesses

Requirements

We are looking for someone who is an exceptional musician, and at the same time passionate about working with others. A willingness to undertake and show aptitude for administrative tasks and/or graphic design is an asset. Applicants should be excited to positively contribute to ongoing community projects and events. All of these qualities are integral for success as a violinist in our team:
 

  • A degree from a recognized university in Music

  • Demonstrate ability to play the violin

  • Readiness to perform in our innovative concert programs

  • Creative flexibility and willingness to explore different musical genres and interdisciplinary arts programming formats

  • Adaptability and ability to “go with the flow” as events change and evolve

  • Passion for teaching

  • Show initiative to be a part of the WRO community

  • Strong sense of teamwork
     

Remuneration
Funding dependent on a Northern Ontario Heritage Funding Corp. (NOHFC) INTERNSHIP worth up to $35,000 to $40,000 and/or funds from other sources such as Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) or the Ontario Arts Council (OAC). Should the Internship not be granted, an interim solution for remuneration will be offered with alternative funding.
 

Additional Info
Billeting close to or in Parry Sound and transportation fees can be accommodated upon request until suitable accommodation can be found.
